The excitement of science in a magazine!

Little Scientists was launched in October 2016 by his Excellency the Minister of Education, Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, his Excellency the Ambassador to Great Britain Mr. William Longhurst, and the UK trade envoy Lord David Putnam. Little Scientists is a monthly magazine, in Khmer and in English, geared towards primary aged children to help promote STEM education across Cambodia.

Children’s magazines are a great way to foster and encourage early interest in STEM. They can be read from cover to cover, or in bits here and there – with their short articles and visual material, they can be less intimidating than books for less experienced readers. Magazines are also topical, they are interactive and participative as they encourage children’s contributions, and the anticipation of the next issue creates a sense of engagement to the subjects promoted.

Science is for all!

A conscious effort is made to ensure that there is no reinforcement of stereotypes and misleading beliefs, such as conceptions that STEM careers are meant for men, naturally “smart” people, or people from higher socio-economic backgrounds. Positive portrayals of women and girls as well as people from low-income families, ethnic groups, as well as those with disabilities are presented here implicitly and matter-of-factly without mention of difference.
